When she and Jeffrey arrived at the Airport to leave for their trip, Judy realized, she had left her license at home. Investigators wondered if Judy has made it to Philadelphia at all. Suspects: The main suspect in the case was, of course, Jeffrey Smith. The detectives on the case seem to think that these items may belong to her killer. Other items, such as pair of Boell Sunglasses and a blue backpack, did not belong to Judy. But how did she end up there? And why would she travel to North Carolina on a whim, without letting either her husband nor her children know of her plans? The clothing that was found, suggested to the detectives that Judy had been dressed for hiking in the woods. Through dental records provided by Jeffrey, the investigators were able to determine that the victim was, Judy Smith. Due to holes and slash marks found in the nearby clothing and bra, and the marks upon the bones themselves, investigators ruled the unknown victim’s death as a homicide by stabbing. They stumbled upon some human remains, clothing and other items scattered upon the ground around a nearby campsite. September 7 1997, Five months after Judy’s disappearance, a man and his son, were hiking in North Carolina’s Pisgah National Forest. After a city wide search for Judy, and several unconfirmed sightings, the police were unable to find any trace of Judy Smith. Not finding any sign of his wife, Jeffrey notified both the Philadelphia PD and her children of her disappearance. After checking the Hotel Lobby, he began to retrace Judy’s route that day. That evening, after his conference, Jeffrey returned to the hotel room expecting to see his wife, however Judy was nowhere to be found. She and Jeff planned to meet back at the hotel around 5:30pm to go to dinner that evening at the Doubletree. She had planned her route prior, to try and visit all of Philly’s landmarks that afternoon. The next morning, on April 10, 1997, Judy left their Hotel room with her signature red backpack, for a day of solo sightseeing.

This was Judy’s first time to Philadelphia, and she planned to go sightseeing while her husband was at the conference. On April, 4 1997, Judy Smith and her husband Jeffrey Smith, checked into the Doubletree Hotel in Center City Philadelphia for the Northeast Pharmaceutical Conference that her husband was attending.
